Councilwoman Emily Root was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Town Council in April 2022 and was elected November 8, 2022 by a 12-point margin of victory to serve out the one-year unexpired term. She is running for a full, four-year term in November 2023.

Councilwoman Root has established herself as a distinct voice and a fierce advocate for her Ward 1 constituents.

As a speech therapist, an adjunct professor at Rutgers and Kean universities and a step mom, she brings a unique set of skills and experience to the Town Council.

As a successful small business owner for two decades, Councilwoman Root understands her most important role as a member of the council is to serve as a good steward of our taxpayer dollars.

Councilwoman Root is working for Westfield residents:

  • As the chair of the Public Safety Committee, Councilwoman Root is working with our Police Department to reduce speeding in Westfield, making our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • As a member of the Finance Committee, Councilwoman Root is focused on keeping Westfield affordable for our families and seniors with policies that hold the line in property taxes while making necessary investments in our community.
  • Councilwoman Root is working to maintain, restore and enhance what we love most about our quaint community, while working on revitalizing our downtown, making it attractive for businesses to locate, invest and thrive.
  • Councilwoman Root supports smart development, such as One Westfield Place, which will result in more than $400 million in private investment in our community and replace surface parking lots with offices, retail and housing while providing Westfield with more than $57 million for public improvements, including new parking facilities, new public parks and traffic improvements.
