Westfield is among the top 50 safest communities in New Jersey, according to NJ.com. Since burglaries peaked in 2016, they have steadily fallen with just 12 last year. The number of car thefts has been been on the decline since Westfield Police Department began using high technology license plate reader cameras that can detect when stolen cars cross into our border. That's important because the criminals who are prowling our streets while we're sleeping usually come in stolen cars. The technology allows police to stay one-step ahead of the criminals.
The Mayor and Council has increased the police budget from $6.65 million in 2017 to 8.22 million in 2023, which has allowed the Westfield to have a full-staffed police department, with 63 officers — the largest force in Westfield's history.
